Amazonas
Theater - A mark of the rubber golden boom, the theater was inaugurated
in 1896. Built in styles neo-classic and art-noveau, predominantly, the
construction was projected by the Portuguese Cabinet of Engineering and
Architecture, of Lisbon, in 1883. Glosses, armchairs, crystals, paintings,
masks, ironworks, marbles and even the beautiful art on the roof, were
imported from Europe. A legion of architects, builders, painters and
sculptors came from Europe for work implementation, and among them Crispim
do Amaral and Domenico de Angelis.
Floating Port of Manaus - projected by the British, the port is deeply linked
to the economical rubber cycle, happened between 1880 and 1910. It has floating
and conventional docks, which were built with the sole purpose of keeping it
perfectly operational during the periods of low and high water levels of Negro
River, when the waters oscillates about 14m. The history of the Port of Manaus
gets confused with the history of the city, which lived in a period of big and
significant transformations, as a result of the luxury and wealth provided by
the extraction, trade and export of rubber. In the last years the Port has gone
through great changes, with the intention of turning it competitive and appropriate
to the demands of globalization.
Adolpho Lisboa Municipal Market - located in the area of the City’s Historical
Center, the Municipal Market, built in the art-nouveau style, in 1992, is a copy
of the extinct “Les Halles Market "of Paris (France). Memory lives
of the rubber golden period; the place is frequented intensely by the population
of Manaus. Its stores offer a variety of products: regional and indigenous craft,
medicinal and ornamental plants, fruits, green vegetables, vegetables, fish,
meats and other.
Zoo of the Center of Instruction for Jungle War (CIGS) - built and administered
by the Brazilian Army, the zoo was inaugurated in 1967, with the objective of
providing practical and direct information to the students of the Course of Operations
in the Jungle. Hundreds of animals (tigers, suçuaranas, leopard cats,
Moorish cats, monkeys of several species, boas, sucuris (snake), alligator-açu,
deer, macaws, real hawks, etc.) they are found at this place, and it is a reference
throughout the Amazon, especially when discussing information and research. The
zoo promotes the recovery of victimized wild animals and returns them to their
respective natural habitats.
Science Forest – created with the goal of promoting the development of
programs of scientific diffusion and environmental education, the forest is located
in the area of the National Institute of Research of the Amazon (INPA). During
a visit to their facilities the visitor will know ariranhas nurseries, pools
with manatees, bee farms, educational trails, alligator nurseries, botanical
garden, suspended trails, free fauna, orchid nurseries, bromeliad and the House
of the Science; besides receiving specific knowledge on the Amazon nature supplied
by very young tour guides.
Museum of Natural Science - administered by the Naturalistic
Association of
the
Amazon, it is located about 15kms from downtown. The museum shelters a fantastic
collection of insects of the area (spiders, butterflies, beetles, etc.), besides
exhibiting in great aquariums varied species of fish from the Amazon (pirarucus,
piraíbas, pirararas and others), besides the voracious black and red piranhas.
