Variable between 25m above sea level in the area of the Port and reading of over 100m in the area around Eduardo Gomes International Airport.

Time Table

One hour less than Brasilia, and four hours less than the Meridian of Greenwich.

Climate

Hot humid, with a yearly annual average temperature of 26, 7º, oscillating between 23, 3ºC and 31, 4ºC. The humidity stays around 80% and the yearly average of precipitation is about 2.286mm. The region has two very distinct seasons; rainy (winter) from December through May, a period which the temperature is cooler, with frequent rain; the drought (summer or less rain), from June through November, a season of hot sun and high temperatures around 38ºC, almost reaching 40ºC during the month of September. It is common throughout the year, to have heavy thunderstorms of quick duration.

Commercial and Banking hours

Commercial hours are from 8:00 to 18:00hrs, from Monday through Friday; on Saturdays usually from 08:00 until 14:00hrs. At the Shopping Centers the stores open from 10:00 through 22:00hrs. On Sundays they close at 21:00hrs. Banks open at 09:00 and close at 15:00hrs.

Gastronomy

Manaus’ gastronomy is extremely rich and exotic in flavors. Most dishes are made with fish, prepared in the most diverse and creative ways, which delights residents and visitors. A person who visits Manaus has to try the variety of the local culinary, fishes such as: pirarucu, tambaqui, tucunare, pacu, acara-açu and much more. The “chefs” create wonders that go from boiled fish (calderada), to baked, fried, with sauce and escabeche. Generous by nature the Amazonas rivers, shelter an amazing fauna, that comes close to 3000 species. The tambaqui for example, cooked on charcoal (the ribs) or boiled, measures up to 1,5m and it can weight up to 20k. The pirarucu, known as the “brazilian cod”, with its large scales and few bones, is served in several ways (boiled, fried, with sauce, etc.) and it can reach up to 3m in length and 150k in weight. The “pirarucu de casaca”, a dish made with uarini flour and fried plantains bananas, is one of the most delicious gastronomic local option. But the delicious Amazonian foods do not stop there. Fruits of inequivalent taste such as cupuaçu, açai, passion fruit, bacuri, camu-camu (very rich on vitamin C) among others, are transformed in delicious juices, sweets, mousses, jams and jelly. The guarana, used all over Brazil and in some parts of the world, with energetic properties is used by the people of Manaus in the mornings to recuperate physical energy.
